SearchExec connects users to relevant results by suggesting attributes and refinement options specific to the search term. For example, a user searching for “copy paper” is presented with search-specific refinement options, such as base color, brightness, length, and manufacturer. Only applicable refinement options are offered, so user time and system resources are never wasted on empty search results. In addition, several attributes can be navigated simultaneously without dead-end paths in navigation.

SearchExec is leveraged in the DOD EMALL online marketplace, enabling the search functionality of over 46 million items from 1,800 different suppliers. Each week, numerous suppliers are added, new products updated, and old services removed. This rapid growth poses several problems for both end-users and systems maintenance, including: delayed search response times, difficulty in product discrimination, and slower than required data additions/updates.
